The SELECT statement is the most fundamental command in SQL and is used to retrieve data from one or more tables in a database. It allows users to specify which columns they want to see in the results and from which table the data should be fetched.

Basic Syntax of the SELECT Statement:

SELECT column1, column2, ...
FROM table_name;
  • column1, column2, …: The specific columns you want to retrieve.
  • table_name: The name of the table from which you want to retrieve data.

Example:

SELECT first_name, last_name FROM customers;

This command retrieves the first and last names of all customers from the “customers” table.

Selecting Specific Columns and All Columns from a Table

Sorting Results Using the ORDER BY Clause

Basic Syntax of the ORDER BY Clause:

  • ASC: Sorts the results in ascending order (default).
  • DESC: Sorts the results in descending order.
